An extensive investigation conducted by the Centre for Digital Music at Queen Mary University of London has brought to light a significant alteration in global cultural values, as evidenced by a consistent increase in negative themes within popular music lyrics over the past six decades. By employing sophisticated artificial intelligence and computational linguistic analysis on a vast collection of over 380,000 songs released between 1960 and 2023, researchers have compiled the most comprehensive historical dataset of moral content in musical compositions to date.

This groundbreaking research reveals a steady decrease in lyrical expressions associated with traditional moral virtues like empathy, integrity, and communal bonds. Concurrently, there has been a noticeable surge in themes related to moral transgressions, such as aggression, deception, subversion, and degradation, dominating contemporary popular music. This cross-generational evolution toward more somber emotional narratives, marked by heightened anger and disdain, offers profound insights into how modern societies articulate their collective identity, shared principles, and psychological struggles.

The findings indicate that popular music serves as a potent mirror reflecting societal trends, providing a unique perspective on how emotions, values, and moral concerns are conveyed across different generations. The analytical process involved examining two large datasets of popular music, spanning over six decades. Researchers specifically looked at more than 377,000 songs with English lyrics from the WASABI dataset (covering 1960 to 2010) and an additional 5,500 songs that appeared on Billboard's year-end charts between 1960 and 2023. Through advanced AI and language analysis, the team traced the progression of various moral themes in music over this period.

Lead author Dr. Vjosa Preniqi emphasized that music is more than just entertainment; it's a medium through which societies narrate their stories. By analyzing lyrical evolution across decades, researchers can observe how emotional expression and moral narratives transform. The study uncovered a gradual transition from language signifying virtues like compassion and decency to themes centered on conflict, harm, and other moral challenges. Conversely, expressions reflecting moral virtues, such as care and respect, became less prominent. Senior author Dr. Charalampos Saitis underscored that popular music offers an invaluable avenue for exploring cultural evolution. The pervasive and influential nature of music allows for large-scale lyrical analysis to reveal otherwise hidden patterns. He noted that music both mirrors and influences the world, and understanding the evolution of moral narratives in lyrics can illuminate broader shifts in culture, identity, and collective values concerning significant social issues.

The research also identified genre-specific differences and variations among artist groups, suggesting a close link between moral expression and musical style, as well as narrative traditions. While certain genres were more closely associated with themes of care and social connection, others more frequently conveyed conflict, rebellion, and darker emotional undertones. Furthermore, the study observed correlations between the attributed gender of artists and the moral content of their lyrics. Female artists were more frequently linked with virtues like care and loyalty, whereas male artists and mixed-gender groups more often reflected negative themes such as harm, subversion, and degradation. It is important to interpret these findings considering the binary gender classification and the existing gender imbalance within the datasets.

By integrating computational methods with theories of morality and human behavior, the researchers successfully unearthed long-term cultural trends embedded within decades of popular music.
